About The Song
“Maggie Mae” – A Brief Interlude by The Beatles
A spontaneous 38-second ad-lib, “Maggie Mae,” found its place in The Beatles’ discography between takes of ‘Two Of Us’ during the Let It Be album sessions. This short piece, recorded during a break, captures a unique moment in the band’s creative process.
Historical Roots: Originally a traditional Liverpool folk song recounting the tale of a prostitute who pilfered from a sailor, ‘Maggie Mae,’ as it’s commonly known, is believed to trace its origins back to the early 19th century.
Recording Session: The Beatles recorded their version on January 24, 1969, at Apple Studios on 3 Savile Row, London. Remarkably, it stands as the second shortest song in the group’s official catalogue, with the briefest being ‘Her Majesty’ from the same year.
John Lennon’s Solo Take: In 1979, John Lennon created a home recording of ‘Maggie Mae.’ This rendition featured Lennon alone, showcasing his acoustic guitar skills and vocals. This intimate recording is part of the John Lennon Anthology box set, released in 1998, offering fans a glimpse into the artist’s solo interpretation of this Liverpool folk classic.
